While composing 18 Months, I acquired a master’s in English. As someone who was raised by drunks in Bluegrass country, I’ve always found the ins and outs of college a bit mysterious. So I was delighted to learn, upon consulting with my professors early in the process, that a master’s degree can be tailored to one’s interests and goals. Via a number of independent studies, as well as modifications to standard classwork, I was able to focus on literature relating to the themes of my book—philosophy, ethics, the crisis of modernity, conceptions of femininity and masculinity, and social media, to name a few.
