Support circles for male people struggling with gender are rife with talk of “purging.” To purge, essentially, is to repent of transgenderism by throwing its accouterments in the garbage bin: girly clothes, nail polish, makeup, jewelry. Patrons of one popular online forum speak of “banishing” unwanted thoughts, cutting their hair, “manning up,” and seeking refuge in relationships. Purges seem to happen in cycles: guilt, purge, panic, re-buy, repeat.
