....fear that to be curious and questioning will lead to discovering unpopular or wrong conclusions. Internalising the fear we are individually too stupid to trust our ability to construe truths. We found out that that being your "authentic self" was the ultimate fakeness.
Beautiful said Shannon. “And there is no counterculture” - wholeheartedly agree, I keep looking to my son and his older friends (13-17), waiting to see something new, but feels like they are simply recycling elements from the last 30 years- maybe something new blooms from this recycling - just maybe this generation, collecting past elements by pure emotion, will result in creating a new vignette. 🤞
I really appreciate this piece, Shannon. I’ve read it twice, and am about to share it with a friend in Munich (along with filling her in with mainly positive, personal news), because you capture this significant shift so well it makes my eyes sting. And the demolishing of culture is so blatant, especially maybe for me, here in a west coast city.
I also found your postmodernism piece relevant and helpful as I’m trying to understand what’s happening and make sense of what the writers steeped and familiar with such topics are writing about it. Thank you!
Amidst the challenges imposed in our post-plandemic world, live music of all kinds and in all sizes of venues is positively thriving and very little is about the big stars.
Can I ask where you are? I love live music, but was able to find much more of it pre-pandemic. My favorite acts are indie and smallish but not local. Those musicians are touring way less in my experience, fewer dates, some are hitting only major cities or Europe. I will drive a few hours for a weekend concert, but it can be tough when the dates near me are weeknights or are so few and far between.

Another wonderful essay.

I am in Berkeley CA. There is so much music in the Bay Area.
