There is a process I remember from psychology class called "reality testing". This is when a person constantly gets their beliefs readjusted by exposure to (hopefully) reality and the actions of others - which are often challenging and to whom we must yield. This is precisely what enables crazed loners - they are isolated so long they have no regular interaction to shepherd their mind back to mainstream views. So they go off writing their manifesto in their remote cabin.

These individuals have been around a long time - but the present is an instance where such people have captured public policy. Its not enough to win the gender war - the failed mechanisms which let it through to make policy need fixing. If this mechanism isn't working - what else has got through?

Useful phrase. I think the "Coddling" work of Jonathan Haidt et al gets at this, too. If everyone is telling you what you want to hear, you aren't getting this adjustment.
